Drake decided now was not the right time to tell his cousin, Collin, to get his feet off the dash of the truck. Drake didnât care, after allâit was his Dadâs truck.
âDo you think that chick from last year will be there tonight?â Collin asked over the sound of the blaring music.
Drake shrugged. âProbably. Iâve never seen her miss a parking party.â
He watched the beams of his headlights bounce across the desert as they drove. The road was about a mile behind them, no road ahead of them to lead the way, but Drake knew where they were going.
âWhatâs going on with you?â Collin asked from the passenger seat.
Drake felt his expression turned to question as he threw his cousin a look. âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre usually more into this.â
âI am not,â Drake argued with a quiet laugh. âIâm as into it as I ever am.â
âBull shit, but whatever,â Collin replied.
Drake could hear it in his voiceâhe wasnât dropping the subject, just saving it for later. It was a relief either way.
âSo have you met the new Brayton?â
Okay, so maybe it had been too soon to call the change in subject âa relief.â Not that Drake minded thinking about Leahâit was all heâd been doing for the last however many days. Speaking of whichâŚ
âShe has a name, dude,â he remarked.
âSo you have met her!â
Drake threw Collin a look. He tried to keep it neutral.
He failed.
âYouâve more than met her!â Collin exclaimed. âWhatâs she look like?â
âWhat does it matter?â Drake challenged. Like, literally. It didnât matter at all what Leah Brayton looked likeâit didnât matter what any of them looked like since they could look like anybody.
âOh my god, youâre such a buzzkill,â Collin groaned.
Drake laughed. Getting a reaction out of Collin was always a good time.
âIs she cool?â he pried. âWill you at least give me that much?â
Drake chuckled to himself. Was Leah Brayton cool?
No. She wasnât cool.
She was hot. In every sense of the wordâhuman and shifter alike.
âWait.â
In that moment, with that one word, Drake could hear it: Collin knew.
âSheâs whatâs different,â he said. âYouâre into her.â
But he didnât know the extent of it. No one did. Drake gave him a glance then glued his eyes back through the windshield.
From his peripheral vision, he saw Collinâs foot come down from the dash as he slowly sat up in his seat. âWhatâs doing, D?â
Drake just shrugged and shook his head.
âDid you fuck up?â
No. Yes.
God, maybe he had. Maybe the whole thing was just some huge cosmic fuck up.
Did he even know any of it was real? How did he know it wasnât all just his imagination?
He shook his head.
If it was his imagination, it was hers too. She felt it, too.
They both did.
So either they were hallucinating together, orâ
âDid you knock her up?â
Drakeâs inner monolog hit the brakes so fast he thought he could hear the sound of tires squealing in his head. He shot Collin a look. âJesus, Col. No, I didnât knock her up. I havenât even slept with her!â
Collinâs entire body relaxed. He slumped back in his seat again, bringing his foot back to the dash with a sigh. âShit. Donât freak me out like that.â
âFreak you out?!â Drake exclaimed. âYouâre the one making assumptions!â
âWell your face got serious AF and the shifter warmth got all garbledâwhat was I supposed to think?!â he shot back. âI thought we were getting ready to have, like, a deep convos, ya know?â
Drake could only shake his head and laugh under his breath. âYouâre a pig,â he said.
âMaybe I am,â Collin replied. âSo you gonna tell me whatâs going on?â
Drake pulled in a deep breath. He wanted to say ânoâ and drop the whole subject. But then, no he didnât. He needed to tell somebodyâand Collin was the single person he could imagine telling.
âSheâs incredible,â Drake said. âSheâs funny and smart, and so fucking easy to talk to.â
âSo then why do you sound like thatâs all a bad thing?â
âShe feels different,â Drake went on.
A pause from Collin. Then, âDifferent how?â
âHer warmth,â Drake replied, keeping his eyes on the dessert in front of the truck. Heâd slowed down, his foot easing off the gas, partly with distraction and partly because the terrain had turned especially bumpy and unevenâwhich meant they were getting close.
âWhat about it?â Collin pried.
Her shifter warmthâthe way they all identified each otherâhers was different. âIâve never met a shifter that felt like her.â And heâd met a lot of shifters.
âWell, isnât that sort of the point?â Collin teased. âItâs how we tell each other apart. They all need to be different or weâd get people mixed up.â
But Drake shook his head. âItâs not like that. Sheâs warmer,â he said. Then he let fly the details he knew would get Collin to understand: âI can feel her through walls,â he said. âSometimes I think I can feel what sheâs feeling.â
The silence stretched in the cab of the truck until Drake forced his eyes away from the road, flicking a glance at his cousin in the passenger seat.
âOkay, yeah,â Collin said. âThatâsâŚdefinitely unusual.â
Drake could only chuckle to himself. Unusual was an understatement. Heâd never heard of anything like it.
âI think my Dad told me about something like this once,â Collin said, but Drake cut him off.
âNo,â he said. âIf you tell your dad, heâll feel like he has to tell my parentsâŚâ he trailed off, shaking his head. He couldnât handle the thought of fighting with his own mother over thisâbecause thatâs exactly what would happen. He knew it.
Collinâs sign was as good as the eye-roll Drake hadnât turned in time to see. âI wish you and Aunt Sam would cut each other some slack sometimes,â Collin remarked.
âI will when she does,â Drake replied. âJustâtell me you wonât tell your dad. For now. Okay?â
âYeah, alright,â Collin agreed easily. âI wonât tell him. But what about Cici? Can you ask her? Or is it too weird?â
The thought had crossed his mindâboth that he should ask Cecelia, and that asking might be a breach of Leahâs trust. Cecelia was her aunt after all.
In the end, heâd come to realize he didnât want to ask anybody.
âI think she might know already,â Drake said. It had been little things that had tipped him off. Still, he couldnât be sure Cici knew what was happening between him and Leahâonly that she knew something was happening.
For all he knew, she thought it was nothing more than a crush
